“Isn’t it a terriblewaste of money?” “Good art is never a waste of money” —DWB,“A Guide to Puzzled Customers”“Nobody wanted Ghost Parking Lot around. Everybody thought it was just terrible. Not David. The tenants didn’t like it. The Village of Hamden didn’t like it. It stayed right there, and he loved it. He thoughtit was just great.”—Bob Bermant (DWB’s brother)CaptionghoST PArkIng loTMemo from DWB to Hamden Plaza TenantsI am aware that many of you are unable to explain to your customers what in the world I am doing with those junk cars along Dixwell Avenue. I suppose you might just say that I prefer them to the untidy debris and black emptiness I usually see there, but I guess I can do better. It’s a lot of dough to spend just to “tidy up” an area. So, I have prepared a series of questions and answers that may be helpful to you.Incidentally, inasmuch as this is still (thank God) a democracy, I can’t and don’t expect all of you to love what I am doing or agree with its concept or even welcome its presence. But I would hope that you will at least present my viewpoint to your customers—and yourselves.112
