BAScheT BroTherSArt at Long Ridge Mall BrochureFrancois and Bernard Baschet were born in Paris, in 1920 and 1917 respectively. The brothers have exhibited their acoustic artwork in numerous exhibitions around the world.Francois Baschet has written: “My brother Bernard and I want to make a synthesis of these elements:“Shapes – Acoustical laws are precise, some families of shapes are good, some are bad. Our metal surfaces can be compared to sails, but with a satisfactory acoustical ratio. We try to combine the aesthetic with the functional.“Sounds – Possibilities in relating sound to form are immense. The chords have to be carefully programmed so that the sounds are not offensive.“Public Participation – We feel that in our present- day computer card civilization the public must find new ways of expression. Whenever possible we invite the public to play. Reactions are very diverse. I encountered about ten tall, handsome, serious Swedes in a Scandinavian museum in a room full of people and our sculptures. They were motionless as they watched the crowd. ‘Are you looking at the structures?’ I asked. ‘No,’ they said. ‘We are watching the public. We have never seen so many Swedes so happy without being drunk.’ ”120
