DAVID BERMANT FOUNDATIONVictoria VesnaNanomandalaNanomandala is an installation by media artist Victoria Vesna, in collaboration with nanoscience pioneer, James Gimzewski. On a bed of sand eight feet in diameter, a video of images is projected in evolving scale, from a microscopic view of the surface of a single grain of sand (achieved with a scanning electron microscope), to an image of the complete mandala. This coming together of art, science, and technology is a modern interpretation of an ancient tradition that consecrates the planet and its inhabitants to bring about purification and healing. The sand mandala of Chakrasamvara represented in this installation was originally created by Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Gaden Lhopa Khangtsen Monastery in India, for the “Circle of Bliss” exhibition on Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2003. This was the first time this particular sand mandala had been made in the United States.144FOUNDATION GRANTS
