the collectionJAMES SEAWRIGHT orbits V 1998 46”H x 19”W x 19”DJAMeS SeAwriGhtDWB once referred to James Seawright as “the best electronic artist in the world.” Born in 1936 in Jackson, Mississippi, James Seawright served in the US Navy before moving to New York City in 1961. He began teaching at Princeton University in 1969 and served as the Director of Visual Arts at Princeton from 1975 to 2001. Seawright retired from Princeton in 2009.A pioneer in kinetic, electronic sculpture, Seawright usually builds only electronic pieces. An exception is “Mirror XVII,” which he created in 1987 as an interactive public piece that was well received in DWB’s shopping centers.“For David to be so supportive was awe-inspiring for us, I think, and so it was a two-way street. It really was a pleasure to know David, and the fact that he cared about our work was a plus. It was something extra thrown in.”—James Seawright38
