When George installed it in my home, I asked him whether it was the model for maybe a larger piece. He turned to me in surprise and said, ‘Well yes, it could be. How did you know?’ And I just said, ‘I don’t really know. What I’d like to see is a piece about five times bigger than this with several courses instead of just one . . . With different colors because I’d like to put it in a public space and I think the general public likes different colors.’ He said, ‘I can do that too.’ I said, ‘George, to do a piece that much bigger and more extensive, what do you think it would cost, and how long would it take?’ He said, ‘Probably cost $10,000 to $12,000 and would take probably six months.’ Well two and a half years later and $25,000 later the piece was designed, created, and installed in the Long Ridge Mall in Rochester, New York. It’s one of the very best pieces he’s ever done and, not only that, pieces similar to it for other shopping centers cost $150,000. So I got a steal, right? I also took a chance, right? I did.” —DWBopposite top left: GEoRGE RHoADS Homage to Wolfgang 1981 25”H x 12”W x 12”Dopposite bottom: GEoRGE RHoADS Lunatick 1990 60”H x 36”W x 2”D22
