the collectionoTTo PIENE Light Ballet 1970 16”H x 29” diameterotto PieneIn 1957, Otto Piene cofounded the German artist group ZERO with Heinz Mack. At the time Piene created “Light Ballet” he was Director of the MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies, an organization that was founded to encourage collaboration between artists and engineers. “Light Ballet” is a metal drumwith rotating lights that was commissioned by DWB through the Howard Wise Gallery in 1970 after he saw a similar piece in the home of Howard Wise. When the piece is turned on, the light “ballerina” dances around the room. For many years “Light Ballet” was used as a coffee table in DWB’s home in New York.56
